Hidden Calling

I'm not the biggest fan of exercise.  I love the idea.  Love the after-feeling of working out.  I know how good it is for you.  Which is why I keep pushing myself to JUST DO IT.  Just lift those weights.  Just keep moving on that treadmill.  In my various health classes over the years they always say in order to be successful in your workout, find something to do that you love.  This just didn't seem likely for me.  Until now...

That's right, folks.  Water aerobics.
I enrolled in a water aerobics class this semester because some sort of exercise science credit is required for my associates degree.  It was available and I was curious.  Turns out it's fabulous.  Know why?

-First: no one can see you, except for maybe the random people outside of the pool if they're looking really closely.  I don't like the feeling of being watched at the gym, or when I go running out and about.  SOLVED.  As far as everyone around can tell, I'm just bouncing up and down in a pool.  Little do they know that I'm making crazy unsynchronized leg movements under the water, because I can.  Sneaky, sneaky.

-Second: It is a workout, but because I relate the pool to fun and entertainment I don't think of it that way.  So even though my heart rate stays up and my legs feel like noodles when I get out of the water--my mind doesn't think of it as work because water equals play.  Oh yeah, and you know how you sweat during a workout?  And how the BYU-I gym requires you to wear their BYU-I grey shirt which is the best color to wear when hiding sweat? Yea... that is solved too.

-Third:  It makes me giggle.  I associate water aerobics with darling old ladies with floral bathing suits (see the above picture).  The fact that I love this way of working out makes me feel like I'm breaching an age gap.  It also makes Ian giggle for similar reasons.  He calls me an old lady.  We laughed particularly hard when my teacher stopped me after class to ask me if I'd be a teacher's assistance for her in the future and... was I ever a dancer?  Turns out I rock at water aerobics.  HA.

So I am here now to witness that yes... you will have a more successful workout if you love what you're doing.  Even if it is...*snicker* ... water aerobics.
